Our Focuses

Art

The kids use art to develop their projects from open prompts. Art has the ability to connect people to their emotions and can lead to self-knowledge and ultimately, to loving one’s self.

Music

The music focus offers the chance to participate in a continuous project that takes work done in class to build the final musical score. Using music to help build connections to an inner emotional life, especially in young children, can help promote self-growth, expression and social skills.

Dance

The dance focus uses motion and choreography to express emotion. The dance focus gives the opportunity for young people to move their bodies freely and without judgement. And in doing so, it creates a safe space to build a relationship with trust and self expression.

Creative Writing

The writing focus produces the richest conversations around topics such as current events, self appreciation and other topics that students bring into a pre-write discussion. Writings can also be used by music, theater/improv, and art/sculpture groups.

Theater

The theater and improv focus challenges students to cooperate and communicate with each other. In the three weeks prior to the final showcase students interested in theater commit to developing a piece on a universal topic of interest.

Program Overview

Throughout our 10 week program the kids accomplish a lot. For the first couple of weeks the students will bounce around focus groups, doing activities and meeting everyone in SASH. As the weeks progress however, kids tend to find the group that they enjoy the most and stick with it. Then each group will continue to do weekly activities but also start to think about ideas for our Final Showcase which is held at the end of our program. The Final Showcase is a day where caregivers can come and see the work that the kids have done. At the end of our program the kids have had a lot of fun and learned more about themselves!
